Patrick Dunleavy

Patrick Dunleavy (born June 1952) is a professor from the London School of Economics (LSE) in the fields of public policy and government. Dunleavy's published material includes:

  • (co-edited)"Developments in British Politics" series (1-8) (Basingstoke: Palgrave/Macmillan 1983 to 2005)
  • "Democracy, Bureaucracy and Public Choice", (London: Pearson Education, 1991)
  • (co-authored) "Theories of the State: The Politics of Liberal Democracy" (Basingstoke: Macmillan, 1987)
  • "Digital Era Governance: IT Corporations, the State, and E-Government" (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2006)
  • (co-authored) "Government on the Web" [Report] (London: The Stationary Office, 1999).

Dunleavy's central contributions have focused on the concepts of sectors and sectoral conflicts, rational choice theories of politics, the bureau-shaping model of bureaucracy, and the claimed contemporary public management paradigm of digital era governance.

Dunleavy is also the author of advice texts for humanities and social sciences students, most notably his 2003 book "Authoring a PhD: How to plan, draft, write and finish a doctoral dissertation or thesis" (Basingstoke: Palgrave, 2003).

Patrick Dunleavy is currently the Director of the MPA (Master of Public Administration) Programme at the London School of Economics.
