Pathways to Housing

Pathways to Housing is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1992 by Dr. Sam Tsemberis, who has a PhD in Clinical Community Psychology, is a faculty member of the Department of Psychiatry of the New York University Medical Center, and originally from Greece.[1] [2] The goal of the organization is to provide housing for the mentally-challenged homeless of New York City. Often these people suffer from substance-abuse problems as well, such as alcoholism or frequent drug abuse.

As one of the first adopters of the Housing first philosophy in the United States, Pathways to Housing currently assists over 500 individuals in New York City without requiring mandatory participation in treatment options as a prerequisite for housing. The organization boasts an 85% retention rate in keeping qualified individuals off the streets.[2]

In their 2007 Annual Report, Pathways to Housing's Dr. Tsemberis says that "Housing is the cure for homelessness. It?s that simple." [3]

Pathways to Housing has an annual operating budget of $15,000,000 according to their 2007 Annual Report. When the agency started in 1992, their budget was $450,000. They get a range of funding including grants from city, state and federal governments, individual contributions, foundation grants and corporate support. In 1992 they were able to help house and provide services for 50 people, whereas in 2007 they had helped house and provide services for 650 people. [3]
