Newspaperarchive
Newspaperarchive is an online search engine based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa that claims to provide search access to the largest collection of newspaper archives in North America. The search engine was launched in 1999 as a tool for its parent Heritage Microfilm to search the company's extensive microform collection. As of June 2008 newspaperarchive says it provides full text search for 909 million articles on 85 million pages over 240 years that represent 2,875 publication titles in more than 748 cities[1] The search results are free however in order to access the document (in Portable Document Format) costs $95.88 for a full year full access pass or $29.95 for a 10-day pass. Searching is available directly from newspaperarchive.com or via news.google.com/archivesearch. The company says that it follows the Automated Content Access Protocol in which its clients have a say in what is available online. The archives that are currently available and OCR'd represent a fraction of the 150 million pages of historical documents that Heritage maintains in its microform archive. According to Heritage it is microfilming 600,000+ pages of newspapers each month and has 180,000 reels of microfilm.[2] The website was brought down for two days in June 2008 by the Iowa Flood of 2008 which flooded Cedar Rapids and cut power to its datacenter. The company says that its physical archives, which are stored on higher ground, were not damaged.[3] ReferencesExternal links
