NCAA Division II independent schools are four-year institutions that field intercollegiate teams in football and other sports, but which are not formally affiliated with any athletic conference.

Football independents (as of February 2008)

• Lake Erie College - provisional Division II through 2008 season
• North Carolina at Pembroke - football only, all other sports participate in Peach Belt Conference.
• North Greenville University (South Carolina)
• Oklahoma Panhandle State University - football only, all other sports participate in Heartland Conference.
• Southwest Baptist University - football only, all other sports participate in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association

Schools that participate in football in both the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Football Conference are also considered independents for Division II playoff selection purposes.
