Mayonnaise jar

The Soviet mayonnaise jar
The Soviet mayonnaise jar
A mayonnaise jar is a glass container that once contained mayonnaise, which can be re-used for other purposes once it is empty.

The 200 ml mayonnaise jar was an icon of Soviet life, which is now losing its symbolic significance in the former Soviet countries due to the adoption of modern Western packaging standards. The Soviet jar style has become a curiosity, though many in the former Soviet Union remember it with some nostalgia. During the Soviet era, the jar had a style of lid which was pressed on, as opposed to current jars which have a lid that is screwed on. The old style lids did not vary for decades. A jar of this style was referred to as a "mayonnaise jar" even if it was not used for mayonnaise; for instance, horseradish was also sold in the same style of jar.
