Lockport Powerhouse

The Lockport Powerhouse is a dam used by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to control the outflow of the Sanitary and Ship Canal and limit the diversion of water from Lake Michigan into the Des Plaines River.

History

The Powerhouse was built in 1907 and is located on the Main Channel Extension in Lockport, Illinois. Credits worth millions of dollars have been earned with Commonwealth Edison for millions of kilowatt hours of hydropower generated at this facility. The Powerhouse contains two turbines, each with a nameplate capacity of 6.8 megawatts, according to Inventory of Nonutility Electric Power Plants in the United States 2000, published by the United States Department of Energy.

The Lockport Lock, Dam and Power House Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
