1 : Yorke, who had been associated with the opposition, was persuaded to accept appointment as Lord Chancellor and was to have been created Baron Morden. However on meeting with his erstwhile opposition colleagues he became ashamed of his action. He refused to sign the patent conferring the peerage on himself and then committed suicide.
2 : John Scott , who was made 1st Baron Eldon in 1799, was subsequently made 1st Earl of Eldon in 1821.
3 : Hugh McCalmont Cairns , who was made 1st Baron Cairns in 1868, was subsequently made 1st Earl Cairns in 1878.
4 : Roundell Palmer , who was made 1st Baron Selborne in 1872, was subsequently made 1st Earl of Selborne in 1882.
5 : Hardinge Giffard , who was made 1st Baron Halsbury in 1885, was subsequently made 1st Earl of Halsbury in 1898.
6 : Douglas Hogg , who was made 1st Baron Hailsham in 1928, was subsequently made 1st Viscount Hailsham in 1929.
7 : Jack Straw is the first Member of Parliament to hold the post of Lord Chancellor.
