L. Stephen Coles

Leslie Stephen Coles[1][2] (born January 19, 1941) is a Visiting Scholar in the computer science department at the UCLA.[3] co-founder, and the Executive Director of the Gerontology Research Group,[4][5] and an Assistant Researcher in the Department of Surgery, at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, in Los Angeles, California.[6][7][5][8] He is a researcher and a spokesperson on supercentenarians[9][10] and on aging.[11]

Biography

He is an M.D. and Ph.D., plus the author of numerous scientific papers, mostly on aging and supercentenarians.[12][13] and holds one patent.[14] The Web of Science shows that his works have been cited over 100 times, leading to an h-index of 7.[15]

He received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, his Master's in mathematics from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. in systems and communication sciences from Carnegie Mellon University, both located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[16] After attending Stanford University Medical School, Dr. Coles completed his Clinical Internship in OB/GYN at the Jackson Memorial Hospital of the University of Miami Medical School. He then taught at UC Berkeley[17] On June 30, 1979 he married Shirley J. Ross, as his second marriage.[18]

He served as a Visiting Scientist for the Central Intelligence Agency's Office of Research and Development in Washington, D.C.[17], and has published with Aubrey de Grey, Leonid Gavrilov and Jay Olshansky.[19] He is the treasurer of the Supercentenarian Research Foundation.[20]
