John Marley

John Marley (October 17, 1907May 22, 1984) was an American actor who was known for his role as Phil Cavalleri in Love Story and as Jack Woltz—who receives a horse's head in his bed—in The Godfather (1972). He was also the lead in John Cassavetes' breakthrough feature Faces (1968).

Marley was a familiar character actor, who appeared in nearly 150 films and television shows (for example, appearances on The Alfred Hitchcock Hour) throughout a career that lasted some 45 years. He was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in Love Story (1970), losing to John Mills who won for Ryan's Daughter.

His son is actor Ben Marley, who starred in many films and TV movies and guest starred in several TV series, including Jaws 2 and The Facts of Life. Marley is interred at Cedar Park Cemetery, in Emerson, New Jersey.
