| | |}Iraq is divided into 18 governorates (or provinces) (muhafazah):
The current set of governorates was established in 1976. http://www.statoids.com/uiq.html The governorates are divided into qadhas (or districts). The map on the right shows the districts (but does not show the district names) within each governorate. As of September 2008, eleven of the eighteen governorates are under direct Iraqi control: Al-Muthann?, Dh? Q?r, An-Najaf, Mays?n, Arb?l, As-Sulaym?niyyah, Dah?k, Al-Karbal?', Al-Basrah, Al-Q?disiyyah and Al-Anbar. Seven governorates are controlled by multi-national coalition forces: Baghd?d, Sal?h ad-D?n, Diy?l?, W?sit, B?bil, N?naw?, and Kirkuk (or At-Ta'mim). Autonomous RegionIraq currently has one autonomous region, Kurdish Autonomous Region, which is also known as Iraqi Kurdistan. See alsoExternal links
