Al-Farooq / Farooq (var. Farouk, Farook, Faruk, Farouq, El-Farouk, Al Farouk) is a common Arabic given and family name derived from an honorific of an early Muslim leader, and by extension has become a common given or place name throughout the Muslim world. Notable carriers of this name include:

Title

  • Umar al-Far?q (or Umar) (c. 580?644), a companion of Muhammad and for the sunnis became the second Caliph (634 ? 644) following the death of Abu Bakr, the first Caliph bore the title Al Farouk/Al-Farooq ("The Distinguisher between Truth and Falsehood")
  • Al-Faruq (or Al-Farooq: The Life of Umar The Great), a book written by Islamic scholar Shibli Nomani
