Estonian Draft

The Estonian Draft horse (also called Eston-Arden) was developed by suppressive crossing of native Estonian horses with purebred Swedish Ardennes stallions. The goal was to develop a tough working horse, and greatest attention was paid in selection towards leanness, good conversion of food, calm temperament, and quick movement. Recently bred Estonian Draft horses are bony, of harness type. The breeding work is done with eight lines. Eston-Arden horses are widely used in various agricultural work and are very much in demand, although numbers are low. They are bred at forty farms, but the basal nucleus of the breed is concentrated at twelve of them.
