The Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) is a research facility at the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The EERC is recognized internationally as a leader in clean energy research and development. It was founded in 1951 as the "U.S. Bureau of Mines - Robertson Lignite Research Laboratory." The Center became a federal energy technology center under the United States Department of Energy in 1977. It became known as the Energy and Environmental Research Center in 1989.
The EERC is located in the southeast corner of UND in of facilities. A major addition and renovation was recently completed. The EERC has plans to build several new facilities in the near future including the National Center for Hydrogen Technology. It currently employs 272 people and has plans to hire hundreds more in the coming years. The EERC has a current contract portfolio of over $100 million and, in fiscal year 2006, research awards set a record at $32.2 million.[1]
