Development of Windows 98
Development of Windows 98 was done by Microsoft in the 1990s, initially using the codename "Memphis" to refer to the product. Many builds were released or leaked, starting with build 1351 on 15 December 1996 and ending with Windows 98 Second Edition.

Build 1351, the first leaked build of Memphis, was released on 15 December 1996. Windows Memphis BetaFebruary 1997Build 1387 (Beta 1), was released on 7 February 1997. April 1997Build 1423, a developer's release, was released on 8 April 1997. July 1997Build 1546 (Beta 2), was released on 31 July 1997 and expired on 31 January 1998. Windows 98 BetaOctober 1997Build 1602 (Beta 2.1), the first build by the name Windows 98, was released on 3 October 1997 and expired on 31 March 1998. December 1997Build 1629 (Beta 3), was released on 12 December 1997 and expired on 24 August 1998. Windows 98 Release CandidateFebruary 1998Build 1691 (Release Candidate 0), was released on 16 February 1998 and expired on 31 December 1998. April 1998Build 1723.4 (Release Candidate 2), was released on 10 April 1998 and expired on 1 April 2001. Build 1900.6 (Release Candidate 4), was released on 28 April 1998 and expired on 1 April 2001. June 1998Build 1998, the finished product, was released on 25 June 1998. Windows 98 Second EditionAfter the first retail release of Windows 98, a second edition was developed. April 1999Build 2183 (Release Candidate 1), was released on 7 April 1999 and expired on 30 January 2000.
