Chickamauga DamChickamauga Dam is a dam on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee, owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Chickamauga Dam is located at ; it impounds Chickamauga Lake and feeds into Nickajack Lake. Dam construction was a New Deal era project started in 1936 and was completed in 1940.[1] The dam is long and high.[1] Its hydroelectric generating capacity is 160,000 kilowatts.[1] A by lock allows barges and other boats to travel past it, raising or lowering them about between Chickamauga and Nickajack reservoirs.[1] Because the concrete of the original lock has deteriorated due to "concrete growth" caused by chemical reactions between its constituent cement and rock aggregate, a $375 million project to replace the lock began in 2003. The new by lock was scheduled to be completed by 2014.[2] Chickamauga Dam was named after the Chickamauga (tribe) of Cherokees who formerly lived in the area.[1] The Wilkes T. Thrasher Bridge carries Tennessee State Route 153 above the length of the dam. The Tennessee Riverwalk, a walkway along the Tennessee River, begins at the dam.
Chickamauga Dam in cultureThe main characters in Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road, while traveling in a post-apocalyptic world in an unnamed U.S. state, have a small discussion about the dam on page 19 as they "sat on a bench and looked out over the valley where the land rolled away into the gritty fog." They could see Chickamauga Dam from this vantage point. See alsoReferences
