CITV-TV

CITV-TV is a television station in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Known on air as "Global Edmonton", the station is owned by Canwest, and is an owned-and-operated station (O&O) of the Global Television Network. It transmits on channel 13 and cable 8 in Edmonton, and is carried on the Bell TV (channel 240) and Star Choice (channel 339) DBS services.

CITV's programming is similar to CICT-TV, the Global O&O in Calgary. CITV's master control is also based out of CICT, along with all the rest of Canwest's television stations. The station carries the full Global network schedule along with 39 hours a week of local news programming.

Transmission

The station broadcasts over the following over-the-air transmitters:

  • Edmonton (CITV-TV, channel 13/cable 8, with ERP of 325kW; primary transmitter)

CITV is considered as a "superstation" of sorts. Years before digital cable and satellite services began offering "time-shifting" packages of multiple network affiliates, CITV was offered in such locations as Squamish, British Columbia; Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; and St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. It still is offered in some areas of New Brunswick.

In October 2008, Canwest Media submitted an application to the CRTC for a transitional digital transmitter in Edmonton. It would act as a digital simulcast of CITV-TV (channel 47, ERP of 5.9kW). The hearing for this application will take place in December, 2008. [1]

History

The station was launched on September 1, 1974. CITV was originally owned by Allarcom, owned by Dr. Charles Allard, and launched under the brand of Independent Television (ITV), a brand used until 2000 when it became part of the Global Television Network. In 1991, Allarcom was purchased by Western International Communications' WIC Television division, which in turn was purchased by Canwest in 1999. It joined the Global Television Network on September 4, 2000, along with fellow Alberta stations CICT and CISA, but had been carrying Global's programming since 1988.

News operation

The station produces 7 hours of news every weekday, and 4 hours on the weekends (a 2-hour Saturday morning show, and two 30-minute newscasts at 6 pm and 11 pm on both Saturday and Sunday).

The station is also the first in Edmonton to have a helicopter. The helicopter, called Global 1, is shared with CHED (AM) for their traffic reports during the Morning News (5:30 am to 9:00 am) and the Early News (5:00 pm to 5:30 pm). The helicopter is also used frequently for breaking news coverage.
