Brent Webb
Brent Webb is an Australian born New Zealand rugby league player for Leeds Rhinos in the European Super League. Webb plays as a full-back and is a New Zealand international.
International FootballHe has also represented the New Zealand national team and was a stand-out player at the 2006 Rugby League Tri-Nations tournament. Although he is Australian born and is an Indigenous Australian of Torres Strait Islander origin, he became a New Zealand citizen which later allowed him to be selected for the New Zealand national team. Australian player Willie Mason created controversy for being televised verbally mocking Webb during the Kiwis performance of the Haka before the first 2006 Tri-Nations match in Auckland, New Zealand. Mason stated that he was mocking Webb for doing the Haka even though he was an Aboriginal (even though Mason was born in Auckland), Webb later retorted that he was not an Aboriginal but in fact a Torres Strait Islander. Mason was later flattened by a massive hit during the game by Kiwis enforcer David Kidwell. He has been named in the New Zealand training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.[1] Leeds RhinosBrent is set to be a huge asset to the Rhinos. A skillful player either in attack or defence, his outstanding performances for both the Warriors and the national team made him a worthy winner of the title New Zealand Player of the Year, which he shared with Melbourne Storm?s David Kidwell. Leeds Rhinos announced they had captured the signature of New Zealand full back Brent Webb during the 2006 season on a two year contract. He comes to Headingley Carnegie fresh from being one of the players of the tournament in the Tri Nations. Since making his first grade debut back in 2002 Webb has quickly established himself as one of the best attacking full backs in NRL, and with a great strength and speed that will ensure he is a great asset to the Rhinos. ControversyBrent Webb has received a four match ban following two head high tackles in Leeds' recent match against Harlequins RL at the Twickenham Stoop. [2] The Kiwi international had an eventful game, being placed on report twice and sin-binned, but then scoring two tries and having a hand in others. [3] Personal LifeHis partner Jenny gave birth to their first son in April 2007 and named him Ruben Douglas Webb, after retired Kiwis captain Ruben Wiki. Brent Webb is a former schoolboy player from Kirwan State High School in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. ReferencesExternal links
