Brave Story
is a Japanese novel by Miyuki Miyabe. A manga adaptation (which would actually be a retelling) by Yoichiro Ono began serializing in Weekly Comic Bunch in 2004 and consists of 17 volumes as of August 2007. An animated film adaptation produced by Gonzo Studio and directed by Koichi Chigira, with scores by Ben Watkins[1], was released in Japanese cinemas by Warner Bros. on July 8 2006 and on DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD and UMD on November 23 2006. Optimum Releasing plan to release the film in the UK[2]. After being "on hiatus" for a year, it is scheduled to be released on September 8th 2008. It will also be shown in German theaters [3]. The novel is available in the English language by VIZ Media, translated by Alexander O. Smith, [4], while the manga is being released by Tokyopop in anglophone countries, with all the sound effects or onomatopoeia being left out unedited and untranslated just like in Tokyopop's other manga. The first five volumes have so far been released in the U.S. with the sixth coming in October. The novel was the subject of a Batchelder Award for a Publisher of an outstanding children's book translated from a foreign language in the United States.[5] The story revolves around a 10 year old boy named Wataru, who must enter a fantasy world "Vision", to find a way to save his mother and bring his family back together to save himself from an unfair destiny. Video GamesA number of video game adaptations have been released.
