Air Trecks

Air Trecks (or AT for short), are a fictional brand of special motorized inline skates featured in the anime and manga franchise Air Gear. Air Trecks are different from inline skates: they have motors and air cushions in each wheel, which lets the users do things that are normally impossible with actual inline skates.

Details

Air Trecks can be generalized as "high-end, customizable, motorized inline skates". They are composed of three major components: Wheel Motor, Hydraulic Cushion System, and Power Injection System. A Braking System is incorporated with most, equipped with a power-lock switch built on the outer sole of the skates. This overrides the acceleration system and enable Air Trecks to operate as normal inline skates as well. However most Riders (Air Treck users) use a Spin-Turn Stop technique, instead of a regular deceleration system to come to rest. However, the speed of Air Trecks are generated proportional to the power of the user's leg; the assist motor accelerates based on the force of a kick.

Generally, Air Trecks (abbreviated as AT) are very expensive (running normally ¥100,000 a pair; which is about $1,000), requiring regular maintenance and tuning. Each pair is installed with a special data support network via a program called READ, which allows Riders to access performance data on another Rider from the data stored on the memory card inserted inside the AT.

The biggest "thrill" of Air Trecks is the precisely calibrated air cushion system, which gives these self-propelled trick skates their juice, allowing the Riders to "fly", enabling them to perform daring leaps and tricks. This aspect is the major theme of the Air Gear story.

Customization

Air Trecks are fully customizable in every aspect, from the skate's design, to the wheels, and even down to the screws. By combining various parts, one can truly make their own unique Air Treck. Most standard-issue parts are available at sporting goods stores, but the rare parts must be purchased at specialty shops (such as Grand Slam, which comes to Tokyo every once in a while), which tend to be hidden or always on the road. Rider team members often have identically customized ATs. The standard Air Treck has two wheels, but it is also possible for 4 wheels on each Air Treck, and even using spheres instead of wheels. A notable specific customization is of The Eight Kings of the Road, they all have specialized Trecks known as 'Regalia' which are the mark of each King.

Being customizable, many skaters have customized their own Air Trecks to suit their own style; changing with various combinations of parts, even screws and/or readjusting the balance, altering the speed and performance of their Air Trecks tremendously.

Air Treck (Ball-Roller type)

First appearance is in chapter 114, worn by Sano Yasuyoshi. The design differs from the common AT in that the wheels are replaced by spherical ball rollers. It is able to achieve a unique walking sensation not normally produced by the average AT. On the flip side, difficulty in handling the Ball-Roller AT is very high, and its speed and jumping capabilities are lower than wheel AT's. It is also a lot more costly.

King

While there are various 'Roads', eight are considered the most powerful and are owned by a single Rider known as the Road's 'King'--or 'Keeper'. "Kings" are the most talented and professional of Riders, having their own Regalia, which serves as proof of their status and strength.

Link Tuner

Also called Tuners for short, they are the assistants of the Kings. Every King has their own Tuner. Up until now, 'Toul Tool To' is the only team composed of Tuners. A Tuner's duty is to repair and/or adjust the Regalia of their master.

Parts War

These are official battles between Storm Rider teams. Originally an online forum for trading Air Trecks parts which evolved into a place where Riders can issue challenges for parts posted on the board. A Rider can wager just about anything from parts to territory, to even team emblems; although wagering team emblems is considered highly unusual due to the risk involved of one's team being disbanded. Nevertheless, Riders can compete in Parts Wars simply to improve their team's ranking. Qualification for class advancement requires three consecutive wins against a team of equal class or one win against a team of superior class; and for each classes, there is a unique battle mode that must be conducted in the Parts Wars:

F-Class: "Dash"

These are F-Class battles wherein a representative from both teams race against each other along a set course. Riders can claim victory by clearing the course first, or by knocking the other representative off the course, outside help is prohibited

E-Class: "Hurdle"

These are E-Class battles where the objective is to retrieve the item at the goal, while clearing obstacles such as buildings. Typically the usage of tricks or regalias are beneficial in these battles

D-Class: "Cube"

These are D-Class battles which pits Riders in one-on-one fights inside confined areas.

C-Class: "Air"

These are C-Class battles where the object is to knock off the opposing team while standing atop poles.

B-Class: "Disk"

These are battles consisting of 3 set rounds, wherein a disk keeper must try to score points by advancing into the opposing side's goal while the opposing side defends and attempts to capture the disk.

A-Class: "Balloon"

These are A-Class battles where the objective is to retrieve the emblems from within a balloon. This is a five-on-five team match with each teammate performing a specific role: The "panther" chases the balloon, the "decoy" lures enemies away, the "ultimate" is responsible for fighting and disarming the enemy, the "middle" assists the others and the "keeper" stops enemies before they grab the goal. All this while following the balloon.

READ

A downloadable program designed for cellphones. The program itself allows Riders to access and download various details on another Rider from the data logged on that Rider's AT memory stick. Accessed information can range from basic stats (such as top speeds and max. airtime) to such detailed data as AT specs, performance levels (including average reaction times and spin radius) and number of moves executed.

Regalia

These are special parts made specifically for the King of each Road which tap directly into their individual abilities. They also serve as the "Kings Proof" which distinguishes the Rider in possession as the one, true King of that Road. Regalia, in themselves, vary from part to part with a wide variety of designs, but all Regalia utilize the air or wind in some manner. For example, Ringo's Thorn Reaper is a pair of modified rear wheel motors that unravel into thorn-like whips when in active mode. To utilize the Thorn Reaper requires extraordinary hip strength, but (like most Regalia) are extraordinarily powerful to the extent of severe injury, even to its Keeper. To that effect, Regalia are tuned and adjusted regularly to, firstly, avoid needless injury to the Keeper and, secondly, to avoid the possibility of the part's destruction brought upon by overexertion on the Kings's part.

Road

Each AT user has their own unique road. The roads are markings on any surface left by practicing the techniques. Over time, the markings accumulate and become a road. Each King has their own road as well. For instance, Agito is of the Bloody Road while Spitfire is of the Flame Road. Other roads include the Rising Road, the Sonia Road, the Hurricane Road, the Jade Road, the Ring Road, the Over Road and the Wing Road. As far as kings and their roads these are all of them for now. Ofcourse their are more roads. Virtually speaking their are as many roads as their are Storm Riders because they all have their own unique stylye. Roads are also the sensation a rider gets when they ride AT's a certain way or a special trick resulting from "riding" their road. An example is the Blood Road where riders usually find thrills in the scarring of other riders and people, and literally carving their road into another's flesh.

Storm Riders

The general name for competitive AT users, although "Riders" is the common reference. In the AT World, Storm Riders are categorized by rank based on skill which are broken into 6 class divisions: F-Class (for beginners), E-Class, D-Class, C-Class, B-Class, and A-Class. There is also an S-Class, or Special-A Class, which is the highest rank a Rider can achieve. One can improve their ranking through a Parts War battle.

Teams

Basic organization of Riders. In the AT World, teams are serious business. Normally, establishing an AT team requires large sums of money which goes to team clothing and designing, as well as minting the team's emblem. Stickers with the team?s emblem design have to be printed as well to mark out its territory, and declarations of war between storm riders are made by placing one team's sticker on top of that of another team's. An AT team also needs to have its own territory where the members can practice their moves.
